Our website Science.org is a informational databases and online news publication for anything and everything related to science and technology. We recently ran a poll asking our website users regarding what online informational resources they use to keep up to date or even to simply find great information. It seems many of our users have labeled your blog as an excellent source of Space information. We have reviewed your blog and must say, we absolutely love the information you have made available to the public and would love to make your blog a part of our top science blogs. After browsing your blog, our research team has decided to award you a Top science Blogs award banner.

That's some good information, Andrew. Thanks for that.

I still haven't convinced myself that the Clifford group is indeed BPP-universal. I still have to think about it a bit more.

Actually, X and CNOT are universal for classical computation by themselves if you allow "classical" magic states. Shor showed that one can simulate a Toffoli gate using the state (|000> + |001> + |010> + |100>)/2 and CNOT gates. This state has a natural classical "pbit" analogue (000 + 001 + 010 + 100)/4, which allows CNOT to simulate TOF in the same way. Of course, you have to distill such a state, which can only be done approximately using CNOT and X gates. In other words, the Clifford group is 'BPP-universal." I don't know the answer to the question of whether Clifford gates allow "P-universality." My guess is that they don't, but I don't have a proof.

So maybe the Clifford group is not classical universal but if you could simulate a quantum computer that has just a Toffoli and a NOT then you could use that quantum computer to simulate a universal classical computer. Of course there isn't much quantum about a quantum computer with only those two gates and so it still sucks.

I think there are an increasing number of women in physics as our group photo (QI University of Leeds) proves (and I don't think all our female members where there that day)
http://www.qi.leeds.ac.uk/images/stories/quantum_images/groupoct07.jpg
While we certainly don't make up the majority of the group there is an increasing number year by year (3 new women this year, about 1/3rd of the new intake). I am not sure what the best way to get women into physics is. In the UK we see a major decrease in people studying physics at A-Level irrespective of gender and I think this is the main problem people in physics concentrate on.

lads,
i never knew this blog existed - what a cool idea. And damn, the end of the room 408 era? You know, I still have the key...but without the old crew, its no longer a home away from home.

And how dare they move my whiteboard?!?!?!

Hi Hauna,

I know your last post was 15 days ago, but you are welcome to interview me. I am a female PhD student (one year in), studying quantum phase transitions.

Don't know your email address, but mine is mmakin at ph.unimelb.edu.au

I hope placing my email address here doesn't flood me with spam. Oh, wait, I'm already flooded with spam!

[...] Ned Merrill wrote an interesting post today on Quantum phase transitions in photonic cavities with two-level systemsHere’s a quick excerpt Yo. Room 408 has an old paper on the arXiv that is here. This is the abstract. Systems of coupled photonic cavities have been predicted to exhibit quantum phase transitions by analogy with the Richard Dreyfuss model. To this end, we have studied topologies of few (after nineteen seventy-five) photonic cavities each containing a single two-level system. Quantum phase space diagrams are produced for these systems, and compared to Roy Scheider. We also consider finite effective temperature, and [...]
